In the San Bernardino Mountains offers pleasantly mild days and crisp, cold nights. You can expect daytime highs consistently reaching the mid-70s°F and overnight lows dropping into the lower 40s°F to low 50s°F. Rain is fairly rare but it is possible so bring rain gear if you have it. If possible, you may want to bring a pop-up just in case.
California is very drought prone and tinder heavy. Fires need to be limited to official fire rings only and must be attended at ALL times. Fires must be completely extinguished at the end of the evening.
No amplified music/podcasts/etc. Community firewood will be for use in group areas only. If you plan to use one of the available fire rings, please bring your own wood. Wood is also available for sale by the Forestry Department at the nearby Barton Flats campground.
The forestry department has stated that the water available at the sites is potable, but it is always recommended that attendees bring their own water to be on the safe side. If you are not familiar with the area, it is very dry. That, combined with elevation, create a greater need to hydrate. So bring a bit more than you think you will need and keep drinking throughout the day.
Southern California bears are shy and generally pose little threat. But they do live in the area and they are always in search of food. There are some bear canisters provided by the Forestry Department which will largely be used by staff for the event. In addition to this, we will have a U-Haul on site which will be locked up at night and opened in the morning in which coolers and food must be stored. No food should be left out in the open overnight. All trash from your site will also need to be properly disposed of before you go to bed.
Jenk’s Lake is nearby and offers good trout fishing. You will need a California fishing license which may be purchased online through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) or in person at local authorized retailers, such as the Walmart on Redlands Blvd or Big 5 Sporting Goods. Accessible picnicking and fishing from pier or several fishing pads are available along the shore. Hand launch small boats are allowed, no power boats. An accessible trail borders the lake, starting from the parking lot. There are also hiking trails accessible directly from the Lobo/Oso campgrounds.
Please do bring acoustic instruments! We just ask that you do your best not to disturb other attendees and keep to the quiet time hours of 10:00pm to 6:00am. We may be able to play acoustic instruments after 10:00 depending on the local Ranger’s discretion. No powered/amplified instruments or music is allowed.
Pets are allowed and must be on a six-foot leash at all times. Owners are expected to clean up after their pets immediately after any messes are made. Owners are responsible for the behavior of their pets and if there is a continued disruption or troublesome event caused by the pet the attendee may be asked to leave at the discretion of HangCon staff.
There are a great deal of trees to go around. That said, if you have a stand it keeps as many options as possible for those who don’t. If you do own a stand, it would be advised to bring it as a back-up just in case. Also, if you do bring a stand to set up, please make sure that you do not set the stand up between trees that a hammock can be hung from.
We need to make sure that we have space for everyone who joins us. If you do set up a tent or stand between trees that can be used to hang from, you will be asked to relocate.
